Located on the former Kingston High School site, Kings Quarter is a masterplanned residential neighbourhood that transforms a significant parcel of underutilised land into a diverse community centred around housing, open space and shared amenities. Developed in partnership with Traders in Purple, the project delivers approximately 80 townhouses and freestanding homes supported by pocket parks, communal gardens, barbecue areas and a residents' clubhouse. The development forms part of the broader regeneration of the site, creating a new residential precinct connected to surrounding parklands and the Kingston township.
The brief called for a range of three and four-bedroom homes that could accommodate different lifestyles while fostering a strong sense of community. In response, the design adopts nine adaptable dwelling typologies, with mirrored and varied floor plans creating diversity throughout the neighbourhood. Homes are arranged along landscaped, pedestrian-friendly streets and rear laneways, reducing the visual dominance of garages and prioritising people and public space. Flexible multi-purpose rooms allow homes to adapt to changing family needs and evolving living arrangements.
Careful attention was given to orientation, solar access and privacy. Courtyards, balconies and alfresco spaces are designed to maximise sunlight, while many homes capture views towards kunanyi / Mount Wellington. The architectural language combines durability and familiarity, with brick veneer and composite timber finishes at ground level providing a robust base, while lightweight James Hardie weatherboards to upper levels reference traditional Tasmanian housing forms.
A defining feature of Kings Quarter is its emphasis on shared spaces and community interaction. Pocket parks, communal barbecue areas, landscaped pedestrian links and a resident clubhouse encourage activity beyond the front door, while integration with Kingborough Council's adjoining parklands extends opportunities for recreation and connection. The result is a contemporary neighbourhood that balances medium-density living with a strong sense of place, community and long-term liveability.
