Located within the Bay Road/Swanston Street Heritage Precinct in New Town, Bay Road is a modest addition to a single-storey weatherboard cottage that responds to the evolving needs of a growing family. Nestled between heritage-listed homes on a leafy residential street, the project expands the existing dwelling by just 36m², demonstrating how a carefully considered intervention can significantly improve the way a home is experienced. The central challenge was to strengthen the connection between the house and its garden while respecting the scale and character of the heritage streetscape.

The addition replaces several later ancillary structures at the rear of the property and is positioned along the western boundary to create a sheltered outdoor living area. A new kitchen, dining room and laundry form the heart of the extension, with deliberately placed glazing framing views to the vegetable gardens and outdoor spaces beyond. Internally, the reconfigured floor plan improves functionality while drawing natural light deep into the home. Skylights positioned above the kitchen and adjoining living areas introduce filtered daylight throughout the day, reinforcing the relationship between the interior and garden.

The material palette is intentionally restrained and tactile. BINQ timber windows and doors, Tas Oak flooring and an American Oak floating island bench establish warmth within the interior, while bluestone paving and a recycled Hobart red brick landscape bench wall connect the addition to the garden setting. These materials were selected for their durability, timeless character and ability to sit comfortably alongside the existing cottage. Timber-framed double glazing and a wood heater provide thermal comfort while maintaining the project's straightforward and domestic character.

Bay Road is a quiet intervention that prioritises family life, natural light and connection to landscape. By opening the home to its garden and creating spaces centred around everyday routines, the project brings renewed amenity to an established dwelling while remaining respectful of its setting.
